We are looking for a Senior Accountant to join our corporate finance team in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Position Overview

The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing accurate and timely financial information to support reporting, operational planning, and strategic decision-making across the organization.

Reporting to the Controller, this position plays an important role in month-end, quarter-end, and year-end processes, financial statement preparation, general ledger management, budgeting, forecasting, and audit support. The Senior Accountant works closely with members of the Finance team and internal stakeholders to ensure financial information is complete, accurate, and delivered on time.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting and General Accounting:

• Complete month-end, quarter-end, and year-end accounting and reporting activities.
• Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
• Maintain and reconcile balance sheet and general ledger accounts.
• Review financial transactions for accuracy, appropriate coding, and compliance with established accounting practices.
• Prepare financial statements, supporting schedules, and note disclosures in accordance with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE).
• Investigate account discrepancies and ensure adjustments are completed promptly.
• Maintain complete and organized financial records and working papers.

Intercompany and Financial Analysis

• Reconcile intercompany accounts, transactions, and cross-billings across related entities.
• Assist with the preparation and review of consolidated financial information.
• Analyze financial results and identify significant trends, variances, and unusual transactions.
• Prepare project cost analyses and other financial reports as required.
• Provide clear and accurate financial information to the Controller and internal stakeholders. 

Budgeting and Forecasting

• Assist with the preparation of annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
• Compare actual results against budgets and forecasts and prepare supporting variance analysis.
• Work with internal departments to gather, review, and validate financial information.
• Support improvements to budgeting, forecasting, and financial-reporting processes.

Audit and Year-End Support

• Prepare working papers and supporting documentation for year-end reporting.
• Coordinate audit requests and communicate with external auditors.
• Assist with the preparation of year-end audit files and financial statement information.
• Respond to audit questions and ensure requested documentation is provided accurately and on time.

Process Improvement and Team Support

• Identify opportunities to improve accounting procedures, internal controls, and reporting efficiency.
• Support the Controller with financial projects, research, and analysis.
• Collaborate with other Finance team members and provide accounting guidance when required.
• Participate in special projects and perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills

• Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
• Minimum of three to five years of progressive accounting and financial-reporting experience.
• Professional accounting designation or active progress toward completion is considered an asset.
• Strong knowledge of general accounting principles and financial-reporting processes.
• Experience preparing financial statements in accordance with ASPE is preferred.
• Experience with month-end and year-end close processes, account reconciliations, intercompany transactions, budgeting, and forecasting.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Experience with accounting and financial-reporting software.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
• High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion when handling confidential financial information.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
